One of the questions we hear most at the start of a project is: "Do I need an app?" The honest answer is that many businesses start with a good responsive website and do not need an app at first, while some need one from day one. The difference comes down to specific questions.
01What each option gives you
A responsive website opens from a link, shows up in search engines, needs no download or store approval, and one version serves every device. An app lives on the phone's home screen, can send notifications, reach device capabilities and work better offline, but it needs store publishing and upkeep for each platform.
02Questions that settle it
- How do customers reach you? If they arrive from search and from links people share, the website is the natural path.
- How often do they return? Frequent daily use (bookings, repeat orders, tracking) justifies an app more than occasional use.
- Do you need device capabilities? Advanced camera use, background work, offline use, or notifications that are core to your model.
- What are your budget and timeline? An app means extra design, testing, publishing and updating across more than one platform.
03The takeaway
Do not build an app because "everyone has an app". Start from your customer's behaviour and need, and let the written study answer: what is the first release that achieves the goal at the lowest cost? The answer usually becomes clear at that stage.
